sister Morphine
have you ever
felt the touch
of sister Morphine
did her kiss
take away
all your pain
pain
is at the core
of our condition
we cannot run
we cannot hide
we must go through it
our condition
we’re primates
on a rock
holding on
for dear life
filling-our-minds
with any number
of stories
some
to comfort
and concealothers
to open
and reveal
would you rather
would you rather
i write poems
that comfort you
or would you rather
i tell it
like it is
would you rather
i feign
omniscience
or would you rather
i challenge
you to think
for yourself
and accept
the discomfort
of not knowing
i don’t know
i don’t know
what happens
when we die
and neither
do you
There are all sorts of things that would be comforting. I expect an injection of morphine would be comforting… but to say that something is comforting is not to say that it's true.
Richard Dawkins, (1941 – ), English evolutionary biologist…
in the meantime
may we find kindness
compassion
and courage
in our conversations
