our attention, our brains, have been hacked
our attention, our brains, have been hacked…
our divisions have been analyzed & amplified…
we’ve been polarized… productized…
our engagement & our behavior have been gamified…
we’ve been fed, head first, into a machine…
that spits cash into the pockets of shareholders…
& brains into buckets of blue & red, partisan pulp.

algorithmic dysfunction
the dysfunction is written on the faces of our young generation.
they’re distracted, anxious, stressed…
fragmented…
sleep deprived…
hypnotized…
they’ve been staring, for too long, into screens…
instead of faces.
There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”

Imagine walking into a control room with a bunch of people hunched over a desk with little dials, and that that control room will shape the thoughts and feelings of a billion people. This might sound like science fiction, but this actually exists right now, today.

A vibe. Perfectly summarised.
Dopamine peaks hit back with alternating lows and cravings...so, if you are going to quit one source of dopamine up-regulation (e.g. social media), it may help to plan for another way to get that hit. Meditation, sex, creative engagement, and listening to music are alternatives. Also there is a an effect called "hormesis" where you up-regulate dopamine through modest distress (the body responds by up-regulation of dopamine and endorphins) such as cold showers and exercise.
